Defense of Dissertation

For completion of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree, students must defend their Dissertation work. The first hour of this final oral defense examination will consist of an open presentation/seminar on their research to the Department followed by a closed examination of the candidate by their Major Advisor and Advisory Committee. This examination will follow guidelines established by the Graduate College and can be wide-ranging but will usually utilize the student's research as a starting point. At the completion of the examination, the Major Advisor and Advisory Committee will vote to either pass or fail the student, with two negative votes by members being deemed a failure for the exam. The request (Announcement of Final Oral Defense Examination form) to schedule the examination is due in the Graduate Degree Certification Office a minimum of 7 days before the date of the examination. Students must be registered for 3 graduate units in spring or fall semester and 1 graduate unit in a summer session at the time of their final defense. It is the students’ responsibility to pick up the dissertation approval pages from the Graduate Degree Certification Office before the Oral Defense Examination. The student types the required information on the dissertation approval pages and takes the pages to the examination to obtain committee signatures.
