| Provisional
Advisory Committee Entering students will be assigned a 3 member Provisional Advisory Committee (PAC), including a Faculty Chair from among the Plant Sciences faculty until a Major Advisor is selected, and a Graduate Student Mentor from among the current Plant Sciences graduate students. Students should meet with their PAC and Graduate Student Mentor as soon as possible to receive advice on selecting and registering for courses, and also for guidance in all aspects required to begin their graduate education at the University of Arizona. Students are strongly encouraged to consult regularly with their PAC during their first semester, or until a Major Advisor is selected, concerning progress with coursework, rotations, etc. At this time, with the help of their PAC, students will complete their Departmental Provisional Work Plan. It is not necessarily intended for students to carry out rotations with the members of their PAC. In the Plant Pathology Master’s and Ph.D. Degree Programs, the PAC will administer a Qualifying Examination. This examination will be held as soon as possible after the student arrives on campus and before classes begin. This examination is designed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the student's subject matter competence, to evaluate their writing ability, to advise the student on course selection including the options on minor fields of study, and to orient the student to graduate education at the University of Arizona. This is not an "exam" in the sense that a student will pass or fail but rather a formal process to ensure that students receive guidance from their PAC. As part of the examination, the student will be given a research article (usually related to the laboratory of their first rotation) and asked to write a mini-review on the subject area of the article (3 to 4 pages). This should be entirely the student’s own effort and will be used by the PAC to evaluate whether the student needs to receive supplemental instruction on writing. |
