Degree Requirements
Ph.D Program Time Table
REQUIREMENTS
The equivalent of at least six semesters of full-time graduate
study is required for the Ph.D. A minimum of 36 units of course
work in the area of the major subject, 9 units in the minor subject,
and 18 units of dissertation must be completed. All requirements
for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must be completed within
5 years of passing the Comprehensive Exam. Should a student not
finish within that time period, he or she may be allowed to re-take
the Comprehensive Exam with permission of the Program, and then
proceed to complete other requirements, e.g., the dissertation.
To meet the minimum Graduate College “in residence”
requirement, the student must complete a minimum of 30 units of
graduate credit taken at The University of Arizona, (18 units
of dissertation plus 12 units of regular graded coursework taken
at The University of Arizona). Units transferred from other institutions
must have received graduate credit and have a grade of A or B.
Registration is required in the semester or summer session when
the Comprehensive Examinations or Final Oral Defense Examinations
are scheduled. A cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher is required
for completion of degree requirements.

Divisions
of Plant Biology and Horticulture and Crop Sciences
Students
are required to enroll in the Interdisciplinary Plant Sciences
(PLS 696A) and the Department of Plant Sciences (PLP 596A) seminars
every semester and
give at least three seminars during their Ph.D. program.
The
balance of the coursework will be chosen based on the student’s
particular areas of emphasis in consultation with the Major Advisor
and Advisory Committee.
Ph.D. Degree in Plant Pathology
and Microbiology -
Summary of Unit Requirements
Division
of Plant Pathology and Microbiology
Students
are required to enroll in the Interdisciplinary Plant Sciences
(PLS 696A) and the Department of Plant Sciences (PLP 596A) seminars
every semester and
give at least three seminars during their Ph.D. program.
In addition, PLP 550 and 551 are core courses required by the
Division of Plant Pathology and Microbiology. The balance of the
coursework will be chosen based on the student’s particular
areas of emphasis in consultation with the Major Advisor and Advisory
Committee.
