Areas of Emphasis in the Plant Sciences Major

Controlled Environment Agriculture

This option provides students with a broad background in greenhouse structures and other protected agriculture techniques, environmental controls, sensors and computer systems for heating, cooling, light management, carbon dioxide enrichment, etc., seedling production, greenhouse crop physiology including cultural practices to enhance crop productivity, plant nutrition and nutrient solution/drip irrigation management, basics of crop protection including integrated pest management, bee management, as well as personnel management and marketing strategies.

CAREERS OF ALUMNI: Commercial greenhouse operation grower/manager, greenhouse entomology/plant pathology specialist, plant nutrition specialist, secondary education, greenhouse owner/operator, agricultural sales.

FACULTY INVOLVED IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: Gene Giacomelli (CEA/Ag. and Biosystems Engineering), Chieri Kubota (CEA/Hydroponics), Patricia Rorabaugh (CEA/Hydroponics).
