Propagation of Cacti and Succulents with a Purpose and Technique: Introduction
by Kent Newland

One of the more enjoyable aspects of growing cacti and succulents is their propagation. Whether to share with friends as a home hobbyist or to be a professional propagator, propagating thousands of cacti and succulents a year for a large cactus and succulent nursery, propagation of cacti and succulents is a rewarding endeavor. The ease of propagation of cacti and succulents has led to an abundance of cacti and succulents being offered for sale in retail markets and is a substantial wholesale horticultural market through the dedicated efforts of the Arizona and California cactus growers. Purposes for cactus and succulent propagation include the following:
  1. Increase of numerous cacti or succulents for distribution and sale (Wide variety of cactus and succulents)
  2. Increase of unusual and rare cacti and succulents for distribution and sale (Madascagan succulents, Pediocactus)
  3. Increase of a specific flower color selection for distribution and sale (Trichocereus hybrids , Epiphyllum hybrids)

Techniques for cactus and succulent propagation include the following:
  1. Cuttings
  2. Bulbils and Plantlets
  3. Offsets
  4. Seeds
  5. Grafting
