Poster Contest

Science Alive Poster Contest

Explanation and Purpose

Science Alive brings together teachers, students and members of the educational community from across the nation in pursuit of educational excellence, to quench the thirst for knowledge and to make science come alive!    This contest encourages teachers and students to explore their creative ideas within the field of agri-science. The posters can deal with anything within controlled environment agriculture such as hydroponics, aquaponics or aquaculture.

The posters can represent the work of individuals or teams and can be completed any time during the year 2003.  Participants will have developed their own projects and clearly and creatively present them as posters.  Posters may not include systems or hardware.   Registration in the Science Alive 2004 conference is recommended though it is not a prerequisite.  All entrants will have the opportunity to compete for prizes in the poster contest.  All entrants will receive a certificate of participation and the winners will be announced at the concluding banquet of Science Alive 2004.

Awards

Posters will be grouped in divisions according to grade level of the entrants. Cash prize amounts will be announced at a later date.

Conference Attendees

Bring your poster to the exhibit hall of the hotel at the set-up time published at the conference.

Non-Conference Attendee Entrants

Posters submitted by people not attending the Science Alive Conference will be included in the contest but must be sent directly to the Radisson Hotel and received there between May 1-15, 2004.  These posters will be assembled for display by student volunteers.  They should be carefully packaged and addressed to:  Science Alive c/o Radisson Hotel 181 W Broadway Tucson, AZ 85701  If the poster is to be returned to the sender, return postage must be included with the poster when submitted.

Exhibit of Guest Posters

Guest posters can be submitted for exhibit.  These posters will not be included in the contest but offer an opportunity to former students, teachers and industry members to show their accomplishments.  Guest Posters must be sent directly to the Double Tree Hotel in Tucson where the conference is held.  Follow the instructions for “Non-Conference Attendee Entrants (above) except mark your poster as a “Guest Poster”.   If the poster is to be returned to the sender, return postage must be included with the poster when submitted.

Judging

The judges look at how significant the project is in its field, as well as how thorough it is.  Science Alive conference attendees have the opportunity to present their posters to the judges, who encourage individuals to speak freely and confidently about their work.  They are not interested in memorized speeches – they simply want to talk about the poster to see if the participant has a good grasp of the content included on the poster.  A scorecard will be used by the judges of the competition.  Categories and associated point values are: Content: Educational validity of poster project—15 points; Grade Level Appropriateness—15 points; Clear and Concise wording—20 points;   Visual Appearance, Merit: Creative ability (unique and attractive) - 15 points;  Photos/illustrations/Visuals—15 points; Overall Merit: 20  Total Points: 100

Help Reward Teachers and Students!!!

The Science Alive Poster Contest encourages teachers and students to explore their creative ideas within the field of agri-science. The posters can deal with anything within controlled environment agriculture such as hydroponics, aquaponics or aquaculture.  These students, eager and enthusiast about CEA, will be the farmers of our future who will enjoy a hobby hydroponic garden or teach others about this fascinating technology.   A student excited about hydroponics, aquaponics and aquaculture could be your neighbor, your customer or your own son or daughter.  Please encourage anyone you know who is eligible for the Science Alive poster contest to enter.   The chance to win cash is only part of it.  Just as important is the recognition they will receive for their efforts and the knowledge and experience they will gain in the process.

In an effort to reward these student poster contest winners with cash prizes, we are hoping you will contribute to this effort.  The amount is up to you.  All contributions will be greatly appreciated.  Plus, all who contribute to the prize fund will be recognized in contest advertising, in the Aquaponics Journal and at the Science Alive conference which takes place Jan 2-5, 2003 in Tucson, AZ .

To donate, please fill out the bottom portion of this flyer and return it to:  Rebecca Nelson, Aquaponics Journal, PO Box 1848, Mariposa, CA   95338.  Make checks payable to Nelson/Pade Multimedia and identify it for the contest by writing “Student Contest Funds.”
