Purpose and Procedures

Typically communities contact their local extension agent, (to reach Cooperative Extension sites in Arizona: (http://ag.arizona.edu/extension/counties/) the agent serves as a liaison between the community and the university. Communities may also contact us directly and we will help them coordinate with their local office. Community members -- including various school personnel, parents and teens -- then adapt the TOP-AZ survey to their unique community needs by adding or deleting survey questions. Parents also are given an opportunity to decide whether or not they want their children to participate in the survey. Youth participation in TOP-AZ is completely voluntary and anonymous. TOP-AZ is appropriate for 7th-12th grade students.

All of the surveys from each community are forwarded to the University of Arizona for analysis. Dr. Betts and her team generate a 30-page community-specific report, as well as a shorter executive summary report, based on statistical examination of youth responses to the surveys. The reports recognize areas of strength for youth in the community, and address potential risk factors for youth. The results of the surveys can be used to inform community planning and decision-making regarding services to strengthen the lives of children, youth and families in Arizona.

The TOP-AZ Survey:
• Allows for adding questions the steering committee deems relevant.
• Is easy to administer.
• Is appropriate for 7th to 12th graders.
• Can be completed in one class period.
• Includes the demographic information necessary to compare subgroups.
• Reveals how patterns of youth activity and mental health vary by such
factors as grade, gender and school performance.
• Assesses the risks teens perceive for engaging in potentially problematic
  behavior.
• Assesses the assets teens use to achieve success and contribute to their
  families, schools and communities.
