Selected Findings
from "Sample" Community

One of the interesting features and benefits of the
TOP-AZ report is that the results obtained in a given
community are presented in light of recent research
information. Thus, the TOP-AZ process involves
more than the collection of data. The paragraphs
below are taken from the
Parent-Teen Relations
chapter of the Sample TOP-AZ report.

Parental Monitoring

Recent research has suggested that parental monitoring can be an important factor in preventing adolescent problem behavior. Parental monitoring involves a parent's supervision and awareness of a child's behavior and whereabouts.
Higher levels of parental monitoring have been found

to be related to lower rates of sexual activity, alcohol and other drug use (Dornbusch, Carlsmith, Bushwall, Ritter, Leiderman, Hastorf & Gross, 1985; Patterson & Stouthamer-Loeber, 1984; Small & Silverberg, 1991). A series of questions in the survey attempt to assess how well teens are monitored by their parents.Teens are asked to indicate, for example, how often they talk with parents about their plans, if they are required to call home if they will be late, and how much effort their parents make to know their friends. [A figure showing the students' perceptions of how their parents monitor their behavior in various important aspects of their lives, is typically presented.]

Parental Support and Love
Another factor that is central to the development of children and the general quality of the parent-teen relationship is how supportive and loving the parents are. [The following results are taken from "Sample" community to illustrate how findings are typically presented.]
In Sample community, 81% of all Sample teens felt that their parents were good parents
"a lot of the time"  or "always." Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Sample teens reported that their parents cared about them "a lot of the time"  or "always." Seventy percent (70%) of students reported that, "my parents are there when I need them," "a lot of the time" or "always." Thus, although teens seem to have some worries about their relationships with their parents, most feel close to them nevertheless.
