GLOBAL SOIL PHYSICS DATABASE
t

Message from Jan Hopmans, S-1 Chair, 1999-2000 (December, 2000)
During the S-1 business meeting the global soil physics data base was discussed. Although there was overwhelming support to continue this effort, some reservations were raised concerning the make-up of the family tree information sheet. Based on this discussion a revised "family tree" form is provided below. Note, specifically, that we ask for a one-page CV as well as a completed family tree information sheet. Please, take some time to complete the forms and send them to the respective resource person, based on geographical region (also indicated below).

Message from Jan Hopmans, S-1 Chair, 1999-2000 (August, 2000)
As we move into the new millennium, there may be no better time to reflect on “soil physics” as a science, and to learn about our heritage. The information requested in this announcement will contribute to the globalization and electronic accessibility of soil physics expertise. To this end, a 1-page curriculum vita is requested from all S-1 members which includes a digital photograph, academic training, research accomplishments and collaborations. An example CV for Jan Hopmans is provided in Appendix A6. In addition, a 1-page Academic Family Tree Information Sheet is requested, which will be used to construct a soil physics family tree.

The end products of this effort will be: (1) a global genealogy of soil physics, and (2) a complete worldwide soil physics database of CV’s. The major headings in the electronic CV will serve to (1) identify the major research collaborations between soil physicists, worldwide, and (2) to provide a comprehensive database of scientific expertise and accomplishments. Moreover, the electronic format of the CV’s will allow automatic searching for key words within the global database. We ask that you complete the information sheet and one-page CV, and email both documents (preferable in MSWord) to the appropriate resource person (designated by geographic region and/or country) as an email attachment.

A poster session with the database and family tree of soil physicists is scheduled to be part of the symposium on “Past, Present and Future of Soil Physics” at the upcoming annual SSSA Meeting in Minneapolis. This symposium will also include invited oral presentations, reviewing past accomplishments and presenting future opportunities.
