S-1 1999 SYMPOSIA TOPICS

  1. Pore Scale Processes: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Progress in measurement and computational ability has coincided with an increasing cross-disciplinary co-action between soil physics, soil chemistry, soil microbiology, electrical and chemical engineering, geophysics, and other fields. This fusion creates greater interest and aptitude to address fundamental questions concerning pore scale processes in porous media. Enhanced understanding at these scales is essential to resolution of flow and transport behavior at larger scales. Of interest to this symposium are topics including but not limited to: geometrical characterization by microscopy, NMR and electromagnetic methods; exploration of flow processes using x-ray and impedance tomography; measurement or modeling of physicochemical and electrochemical liquid-solid interactions; micro-scale transport processes; pore space dynamics; and physically-based models for mass and energy behavior at relevant scales.Possible co-sponsor: S-2.
