Examples of Recent Environmental Projects:

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (2007-2009):  Water use and ecohydrological relations of saltcedar and native plants on the Lower Colorado River (with P. Nagler, USGS, PI).

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (2007-2009):  Water use of shrubs and grasses irrigated with brine from a reverse osmosis plant in a desert irrigation district (with M. Yoklic, University of Arizona, PI).

U.S. Department of Energy UMTRA Program (1992-2009):  Water use by grazed and ungrazed plants over a nitrate-contaminated plume at a former uranium mill site in the Great Basin Desert.

Restoration of abandoned agricultural land at Arizona Public Services’ Redhawk Electric Generating Facility:  We used innovative land preparation and water harvesting techniques so that initial plantings would mature into a self-sustaining native desert community in the future.

Revegetation of mine tailings at Resolution Copper Company in Superior, Arizona:  We designed and tested evapotranspiration (ET) caps that would support vegetation and prevent infiltration without the need for geotextiles or evaporation barriers between the tailings and the cap material.

Los Reales Landfill, City of Tucson:  We designed and tested low-cost ET caps that meet EPA and ADEQ standards and are compatible with current landfill practices.

Revegetation and Phytoremediation of Boston Mill Site, San Pedro River:  We developed methods to revegetate a historic mill site with riparian grasses and shrubs, including an innovative method for restoring giant sacaton grass to the site, a threatened species in Arizona riparian corridors.

Irrigation of Halophytes with Brine from Reverse Osmosis and Floride Removal Plants:  We designed and built a halophyte planting to receive mildly saline brine from a Floride Removal Plant in Twentynine Palms, CA, and are conducting a demonstration project for disposal of brine from a CAP desalination plant in Marana, AZ.

Other projects include:  Restoration Potential of the Colorado River Delta, Mexico (Funding sources: USFWS-National Wetlands Council); Vegetation Mapping of the Colorado River Delta (NASA); Water Budget for the Colorado River Delta (Environmental Defense Fund);  Phytoremediation of Lead Contaminated Soils (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation); Seaweed Aquacutlure as a Community Enterprise on Molokai (NOAA, USDA-SBIR Phase II); Rapid Denitrification of Contaminated Soils (NSF-TRIF); Tree Rings to Detect Stress in Cottonwood and Willow (NSF-TRIF)l Water Use by Riparian Species, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; Treatment and Disposal of Industrial Waste Water and Solids from Guayule Processing, Yulex Corp.

Areas of Research Interest:

Evapotranspiration and ecohydrology of riparian vegetation; phytoremediation and revegetation; arid zone conservation & environmental biology; desert botany; wetland & aquatic plants; seaweed aquaculture; halophytes & salt tolerance mechanisms.
