Nitrogen contamination of the environment, particularly nitrates in water supplies, and nitrous oxide loss to the atmosphere, is a major concern. Efficient use of nitrogen fertilizers and a thorough understanding of factors controlling nitrogen transformations are critical for effective management. Current projects involve nitrogen transformation, fate, and management and are providing information that can improve efficiency of nitrogen use and lead to minimization of agricultural environmental impact.
