Women in Science and Engineering is proud to present our new iSTEM Mentoring Program! This collaborative effort by the Southwest Institute for Research on Women, Strength Building Partners, Women in Science and Engineering, and several University of Arizona colleges is designed to give students and professionals the opportunity to give back to the local community.  This is a volunteer program but it is also a for credit opportunity where students can earn 1-3 credits in Gender and Women’s Studies during the Spring 2013 semester. more info

Information:

The Air and Waste Management Association Grand Canyon Section is offering a $1,000 undergraduate/graduate student scholarship.

The awards will be based on a technical paper competition.  The technical paper must be an original work, solely authored by the applicant and may consist of one of the following:
* A literature review, including a section on relevance and recommendations;
* A report on a research project;
* A proposed research plan.

Technical papers written as part of class work are acceptable and encouraged as long as the paper meets the above requirements.

NEW PROGRAM AREAS-- SPRING 2011

  • Research Translation for Environmental Science--This program will award a M.S. degree in Soil, Water, and Environmental Science with a specific focus on research translation for environmental science. more info
  • M.S. Degree in SWES With a Journalism Concentration--This non-thesis program will award a M.S. degree in Soil, Water, and Environmental Science with a specific focus on journalism for environmental science. This program was developed in
    collaboration with the School of Journalism. Those interested in this program may also wish to consider the Dual Degree Program (see below) in Journalism and Soil, Water, and Environmental Science. more info

New dual Master's Degree program offered:
Soil, Water and Environmental Science and Journalism

Graduates with this dual degree would be able to make important contributions not only to discussions within news organizations about the ways in which information about science should be gathered and evaluated, but also discussions in the fields of science and journalism about the ways in which this information influences public perceptions and public policy, and therefore the effects of science on society. SWES Class Websites

SWES 495F/595F Conservation Biology: Field Studies in Nambia The course takes graduate and undergraduate students to Namibia for six weeks where students are exposed to a multitude of unique experiences, including meeting foreign scientists and conducting independent research projects.

Graduate Certificate in Water Policy

The University of Arizona's Graduate Certificate in Water Policy offers breadth and depth of education. The Certificate is intended for two different and complementary groups of people who want to build their expertise in water policy: working professionals pursuing the Certificate only and UA graduate students concurrently enrolled in a graduate degree program. There is flexibility in both course selection and schedule, to meet the specific needs and interests of a variety of students. The program is interdisciplinary. Soil Science Certification

The Soil Science Certification is a program of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA).   This program is designed to foment, certify, and advance the standards of professionalism for active practitioners of soil science, a process that is also available to other professionals such as engineers and geologists.
To pass the fundamentals exam, you should have taken no less than three semester courses in soil science, but preferably five courses. Certification as a Professional Soil Scientist (Soil Classifier).
