Walker Basin (Summer) Allotment
1965 Permittee Plan

The plan sets forth the current management practices, improvement maintenance, and improvement construction, mutually agreed upon by the permittees, Bruce Brockett, and William M. Sullivan, and District Ranger Robert M. Williamson, for the 1965 grazing season. This plan will be followed as outlined unless unusual circumstances necessitate a change. Changes will be made only after mutual agreement has been reached by the permittees and the District Ranger.

Free Use

The horses being grazed under the G3(b)(4) and the Free Use permits will be restricted to the same Units as the cow-calf herd. No horse use will be allowed in the steer pasture. Horses will still be permitted to use the small pasture adjacent to Mahan Park. Use in this pasture should be as light as possible. If additional small pasture use is needed for horses they will be allowed to use the small horse pasture at Harris Park.

Management

The following steps will be taken during the 1965 grazing season in order that the over-all management objectives might be obtained:

  1. There will be no cattle, or horse, use allowed within the steer or heifer pastures. Periodic riding should be done in these units to remove all incidental use that might develop during the course of the summer.
  2. The cows will be put into the summer allotment at Buckhorn, beginning about June 1st. They will then be allowed to move through the Horse Knoll Unit and into the pine type. The Rim fence should remain closed until July 1st, if possible this date will be later, in order to give the pine zone some added deferment. This fence will then be opened and the cattle allowed to drift into the pine on their own. They will remain in these two units until the Fall movement takes place.
  3. Use within the proposed Snake Ridge Unit will be held to a minimum. Prior to the completion of the juniper fence, in August, this will be accomplished by two means: (1) No salt will be placed south of the proposed fence line; (2) Periodic riding will be done to move cattle back into the Horse Knoll Unit from the Snake Ridge Unit. Following the completion of the juniper fence all cattle will be moved out of the Snake Ridge Unit for the balance of the grazing season.
  4. The permittee plans to ship the large calves from Mahan Park during the early part of November. As these calves are gathered for shipment they will be placed in the steer pasture. No cattle will be placed in the steer pasture prior to September 30. All use in the pasture will be limited to those calves, and their mothers, that are to be shipped. Following shipping the cows will be immediately returned to the Banfield Unit.
  5. All salt will be placed on feed. No salt will be placed on water except when mutually agreed upon by the permittees and District Ranger.
  6. Range riding will be done frequently to insure adequate distribution of the cattle within the Units they are grazing. Riding will also be done in the deferred and rested units to insure that the use is held to a minimum.

Improvements

During FY 1966 the following range improvement program will be accomplished through the joint efforts of the permittee and the Forest Service.

The Forest Service will accomplish the following improvement work, providing that monies are made available:

  1. Construct "Juniper" fence. This fence will run from Buckhorn to Turkey Draw Tank. The final location will be flagged by the permittees and District Ranger.
  2. "Cherry Tree" tank will be constructed as shown on the Objective Management Plan Map.

The permittees are aware of their fire control responsibilities as outlined in the ten year permit and objective management plan. They and any of their representatives will abide by all stipulations as outlined.
