Dear Bill:

This letter sets forth management practices, use schedules, range improvement maintenance and/or construction on the Walker Basin Allotment for the coming season.

About November 1, 1970 the bulls should be moved to the west side of the Bull Pasture to be fed through the winter, and until rejoining the cow herd.

Your cow herd should move into the Twin Buttes Unit on November 1 and remain until about December 15, or until the snow drives them out. At this time they should be placed in the Shipping Lane Unit, and move onto the Walker Rim Unit about January 1, 1971. Cattle should move into Russell and Wickiup areas near February 1, in conjunction with the east side of the Bull Pasture. From there they can be moved back into the Shipping Lane Unit in mid-April, to Twin Buttes about May 1 and to summer range the latter part of the month.

Replacement heifers will be kept in an off-forest operation for the winter season. We (USFS and permitee) should adhere as closely as possible to this schedule. Production and utilization studies will follow in all pastures from which the cattle move. All moves (dates) mentioned will be changed to coincide with proper use (35-40%) should proper use precede the given date.

Salt will be used as a tool for better distribution, and should be placed on feed and not on water.

Normal fence maintenance should be done and the cattleguard for use between Cedar Flats Unit and Twin Buttes Unit in SE1/4 of Section 15, T14N,R7E should be set. The pre-constructed cement box is presently available at the Sedona Ranger Station.

Sincerely yours,

GERALD L. MUNDELL
District Ranger
