Basis for Determining the Revised Estimate of Grazing Capacity

(item IV on the front of the form [above]).

I. Summary of estimated capacity as shown on form R3 2200-26

Pasture NF AM's SWFI AM'S OTHER PRIVATE AM'S
Heifer 47 63 --
Snake Ridge 368 16 --
Buckhorn 40 -- --
Horse Pasture 14 21 8
Steer 180 194 14
Pine 528 95 4
Horse Knoll 447 -- --
TOTALS 1,624 389 26

2013 AM's or 403 animals for 5 months on NF and SWFI lands. 26 AM's or 5 animals for 5 months under private land permit.

II. Production and Utilization Study (1968)

This study indicates a proper stocking of 400 cattle and 10 horses for the five month season of 6/1 - 10/31. (2050 AM's).

III. Past Actual Use

Five year period prior to the existing non-use agreement (1959-1963):

3358 AM's or 672 cattle and 61 AM's or 12 horses for the season of 6/1 - 10/31 (there was also an estimated 10 head of stray horses on the allotment yearlong during this period).

Under this use, the range and soil condition in nearly all areas was on a downward trend.

Five year period during the non-use agreement (1964-1968):

2088 AM's or 418 cattle and 75 AM's or 15 horses for the season of 6/1 - 10/31 (there was also an estimated 15 head of stray horses on the allotment yearlong during this period).

Under this use, the definite downward range and soil trend appears to have been checked.

IV. Stocking on Nearby Allotments

The Landmark Allotment has a stocking rate of 8.1 suitable acres per animal month. This allotment is nearly all in fair condition with considerable range rated as good and very little range which is poor. Utilization is nearly proper and production is high.

The Beaver Creek Summer Allotment has a stocking rate of 13.3 suitable acres per animal month. lt is quite similar to Walker Basin and appears to be improving under this rate with proper management.
