Soils Basics

Soil Function within Watersheds

Soil plays a very important role in the hydrologic cycle, regulating the flow of water and nutrients through the system. Soil characteristics influence the rates of infiltration, runoff, and water storage. Land use practices and management actions can significantly alter soils’ capacity to perform these functions. We will begin with a basic understanding of soils and their functions within an ecosystem and then explore conservation practices that can help to preserve or restore soil characteristics.
