Stream Features
The repeating sequence of riffles and pools in a stream help maintain its stability. Riffles are generally found entering and exiting meanders. Pools are located on the outside bends of meanders between riffles and are much deeper than the average channel depth, and therefore within the thalweg. Stream banks located on the outside of meanders are termed cut banks, as flowing water removes sediment from this side of the channel. The inside of the meander bend is called a point bar and is the location of sediment deposition.
