      "Seeds for Change" - A Garden Basket Reception"
      Saturday, February 26, 2000 - 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.
      Arizona Science Center - 600 East Washington Street - Phoenix

      Lead by award winning chef RoxSand Scocos, we are celebrating the importance of nurturing our children through the magic of gardening! Renowned Arizona chefs will be matched with school & community gardens to grow produce which will be harvested and prepared for a "garden fresh" gourmet feast!

      Agenda
      The enchanted evening begins under stars at the Arizona Science Center. Guests will nibble on appetizers while strolling through the Silent Auction fund-raiser and exhibits. Then it's off to explore the Arizona Science Center to sample a tantalizing feast prepared by the Chefs .

      Guests will be welcomed into the sights and sounds of the Irene P. Flinn Theater to honor winners of the Southwest Region "Let's Get Growing" awards given to outstanding volunteers, corporations, public agencies, school/community garden projects.

      Goals
      This event brings together culinary professionals, educators, community gardeners, school administrators, public agencies, elected officials, and business leaders to build awareness, showcase outstanding garden & habitat projects and promote the use of gardening within school curriculums. Funds raised from this evening will be used to establish an endowment at the University of Arizona for the long term growth and support of community and school youth gardening programs.

      "Hands-On" Institutes
      Friday - February 25, 2000

      Here's What We've Dug Up!
      Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a day of "hands-on" learning and fun. Three types of experiences are offered. Get Growing Institutes, Food Security Round Table and Curriculum Exploration.

      "Hands-On" Institutes
      Three different Institutes are offered at The Farm at South Mountain.
      They are designed to increase your knowledge and confidence in gardening in the Southwest and creating art projects for the garden. These workshops are available for an additional fee. Lunch is included. Space Limited. Certificates of Completion for continuing education credit will be issued.

      Get Growing! $30 (Limited to 75 people)
      This comprehensive workshop will give you the "dirt" on all you'll need to know on how to plan, grow and maintain a successful garden. Participants will learn composting secrets, seasonal tips, what species do best when and lots more. We'll review irrigation systems and nutrient cycling and tell you all the best dirt...and everything you need to garden in the SW. Bring your gloves and get ready to "dig-in" with the experts!

      Art in the Garden - I $30 - (Limited to 30 people)
      We've learned a one hour session is just not enough to satisfy your creative energy! Now you'll have the day to try new techniques and learn from the experts on how to use or enhance your garden through art. Join us as we create mosaic tiles with artist Joan Baron and how to create dyes from plants in the garden with fiber artist and weaver Kate Foster.

      Art in the Garden - II $30 - (Limited to 30 people)
      Art in the Garden was so popular last year, we added one more session!
      Lynn Town from Southwest Gardener will show you how to create a tranquil table top water fountain. The principles used to create this make"n"" take fountain can be applied in many ways to bring the soothing sound of water to your classroom, garden or home. All Supplies are included. Then, learn how to make bird houses from gourds with expert master gardener and member of the Southwest Gourd Society Frank Martin.

      Community Food Security $10
      What are the issues and how do you discuss them with policy and decision makers.
      Join us for a powerful day of tool development and dialogue. We will begin with a training on becoming a effective advocate for community food security issues. Next, we will put our tools into practice in a roundtable discussion with local public officials on community food security issues in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

      Curriculum Exploration - I $20
      Food Land & People, Monica Pastor, Maricopa County Cooperative Extension.
      Project Food, Land & People's Resources for Learning was created in 1998. The goal of this curriculum is to provide educational resources and promote approaches to learning that help educators and students grades PreK-12 better understand the interrelationships among agriculture, the environment, and people of the world. This dynamic curriculum session will give you an overview of the curriculum and how to use it in the classroom.

      Curriculum Exploration -II $20
      Junior Master Gardener Program - Lisa Whittlesey, Texas A&M University
      The Junior Master Gardening Program is a new and exciting youth gardening program that cultivates leadership and volunteerism by utilizing fun, hands-on gardening projects. The sessions will include an overview of the Level One curriculum materials and program design, implementation of local JMG programs, current program evaluation/research, program fundraising efforts and future program expansion ideas. You'll also take part in hands-on activities and projects.
