Historic Trees Program

American Forests offers seedlings of trees that have been identified as living landmarks to events and lives that have shaped our nation. For example, a Douglas fir in California was burned to mark the passage of the Forty-Niners to the Pacific Northwest during the Gold Rush. Trees have been tied to such personalities as Martin Luther King, Jr. (sycamore), Clara Barton (redbud), Thomas Edison (oleander), Helen Keller (Southern magnolia and water oak), Susan B. Anthony (sycamore) and the Navajo-Apache people (cottonwood).

Unfortunately, none of American Forests' trees can be shipped to Arizona at this time due to agricultural restrictions. However, trees grown in Arizona nurseries could be planted as a learning alternative; these trees would not be the true "historical" specimens but could provide valuable educational experiences.
