Qat is grown almost exclusively on land >1000 m elevation in the wetter or irrigated areas of the region in western Yemen marked "Highlands." The Tihama ("hot" in Arabic) is a flat coastal plain where millet and sorghum predominate. Wadi Hadramout produces largely dates, livestock fodder, and market-garden produce. The Marib area grows oranges and other fruits/vegetables for Sana'a and other urban markets. (back)
