Building Project Overview

Project Plans

The Norton School 's new home, McClelland Park , will be a 70,000 gross square foot building at Park Avenue and 4th Street , near the UA campus' newly remodeled Park Student Union and the west-side main entry point, with a view north to the Catalina Mountains. This high-profile location offers convenient garage parking. The front entrance will incorporate a welcoming "front porch" area and will create a procession to a major public space adjacent to an existing Science Concourse green space. Designed with shade trees, an overhead ramada and a variety of seating, this outdoor space will be dedicated during Homecoming 2006 as the Lakin Family Plaza .

Sited between the historic core of the campus to the north and a group of scientific research buildings, McClelland Park will mark the transition through the creative use of materials and architectural fenestration. The building will be sensitive to the desert environment and take advantage of light to the north while incorporating shade to the south. The interior will feature a spacious main lobby, flexible spaces for faculty and research, and multiple areas for students, all greatly increasing the ability of the school to serve students, families, and businesses. The Lakin Family Plaza will serve as a "civic living room" where students can study and meet, the campus community can "window shop" displays of the work of the school's faculty and students, and visitors can experience events and presentations. The design plan for both interior and exterior spaces captures the school's different facets-family and close knit bonds, the marketplace and corporate images, and diversity of subjects, ethnicities, and approaches.

The architect is SmithGroup, a firm with extensive experience on the UA campus and a commitment to both design excellence and environmental sustainability. The construction manager is Hensel Phelps Construction Company. A highly experienced team of UA planners, architects, and facilities specialists supports the project as well.
