Openness and river basin institutions: Plata River basin map

The Plata River basin comprises the Parana-Paraguay Rivers system and the Uruguay River system; it is shared by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The Parana rises in southeast central Brazil and flows generally southward. The Parana's major tributary is the Paraguay River, which rises in the Mato Grosso region of Brazil and flows into the Parana near the northern border of Argentina. The Uruguay River rises in the coastal range of southern Brazil and flows generally southward until its conjunction with the Parana. The Parana and the Uruguay meet at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata, which forms the estuary of these two river systems. The Plata River basin drains about 1/4 of the South American continent.
