In this photograph from Petra Tschakert's article, "Our carbon is gone; we have to bring it back!": Soil fertility management and social learning in Senegal's drylands, community memberss are being shown how to measure tree diameters at breast height, as a first step in the process of measuring soil and biomass carbon in their village fields. The author proposes that this sort of local involvement is essential if soil carbon sequestration projects in Senegal's drylands (and other drylands) are ultimately to be successful.
