Description of Conditions: Feeds under bark through summer & moves down trunk as cold weather approaches. Symptoms: frass at base of tree or globs of sap exuding from base of tree indicate larval entry points; weakend tree (droopy leaves & dying branches).
Control Strategy: Dig out larva with pocket knife; for heavy infestations, insecticides or parasitic nematodes are effective during early larval stages; white paint on bark at base of tree helps seal cracks where female moths lay eggs.

Control Strategy: Spray with bacillus thuringiensis (BT) during bloom time; disrupt mating with pheromones.  Has multiple natural enemies.

Description of Conditions: Often attached to stressed trees.  Feeds on old and new needles and tender bark of young twigs; can defoliate tree in short time.
Control Strategy: Handpick; shake off; prune from tree and destroy; insecticidal soap; insecticides (ingredients such as: acephate, bifenthrin, carbaryl, permethrin).

Description of Conditions: More often found on trees not surrounded by other trees.  High populations can defoliate tree but do not kill it. Rare in Prescott area.
Control Strategy: Prune & destroy infested portion of branches while webs are small.  Remove large webs with a stick or pole w/ nail inserted crosswise – twist pole after insertion into web – remove and bag or burn.  Only use insecticide sprays (BT, carbaryl, acephate)  if natural predators (wasps, birds, stink bugs, parasitic flies) are not present.

Description of Conditions: Crawling on willow tree. This insect is known to feed on peaches, asparagus, beans, sunflower, grasses, and weeds. Overwintering bugs are known to feed on curly dock and mullien.
Control Strategy: Clean cultivation of orchards in fall will discourage overwintering bugs. If bugs are found, apply an insecticide to the ground cover to kill adults before they move out of the orchard to other hosts. Formetanate Hydrochloride (Carzol) and Endosulfan (Thiodan) are labelled for use on fruit trees to control stink/plant bugs.

Description of Conditions: Emerging adults create small holes in bark; often attack sun-burned trees or trees low on water or nutrients.
Control Strategy: Remove & burn infested stems or twigs.  White latex paint on young tree trunks can help prevent sunburn.

Description of Conditions: The snailcase bagworm (also known as the garden bagworm) was recorded for the first time in Arizona in Prescott during the summer of 2011. The coiled, silk case is covered with soil particles and excrement. The 2011 sample was from the Sweet Acres area off of Senator Hwy. In 2012, it was found in the Government Canyon area on Butterfield Rd. It is a nuisance insect that can eat vegetable and flower seedlings. It also skeltonizes leaves but had not caused lasting damage to the apple tree in the photo.
Control Strategy: Apply carbaryl dust, kaolin clay dust, or diatomaceous earth where feeding is occurring.

Description of Conditions:  Found in summer.
Control Strategy: Manually remove with tweezers; caterpillar hairs in cocoon may irritate skin (wear gloves).  Outbreaks are rare; trees may tolerate one season of defoliation; insecticides are impractical under most conditions.

Description of Conditions: Tend to feed on buds, within furled leaves, & other unexposed areas of plants.
Control Strategy: Prune and destroy infested material; insecticidal soap provides temporary reduction when thrips first appear; dormant oil helps control over- wintering thrips; systemic insecticide (on non-edible plants only) may be required during growing season.  Avoid insecticidal sprays, as they kill natural predators.
