In localized Sahelian areas, land degradation is severe enough to be classified as “desertification.” Almost always triggered by humans through overgrazing or over-farming, winds can remove all topsoil; later, intense rains can then start to carve gullies.
(Locales in which land degradation is so
great that on human timescales, the damage is irreparable. Of course, on geological timescales, these areas will probably heal.)
