The southern Arizona desert is dotted with the remains of countless communies and scored with hundreds of kilometers of irrigation canals built by the vanished Hohokam (an O’odham word meaning ‘all used up’) culture. Arizona’s capital, Phoenix, and its suburbs are built on the most extensive such canal system in the Americas.
