Collegiate Livestock Growers Association
The Collegiate Cattle Growers Association was established in the Fall of 2005 by a group of students who wanted to bring their love of cattle and the beef industry to the University of Arizona. In 2014 CCGA officially changed the club name to the Collegiate Livestock Growers Association to reflect the expanding interests of members. The club also became officially aligned with the National Block and Bridle club to provide students with additional networking and scholarship opportunities. The CLGA is made up of primarily animal science students, but also has members from all over the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The group has several major projects each year for members to participate in.
With help and support from the University of Arizona Food Products and Safety Laboratory CLGA is able to provide quality cuts of beef, pork and lamb to consumers in the Tucson area. The profit from meat product sales goes directly to the Collegiate Livestock Growers Association. Sales are held every Friday from 3 to 6pm at the UA Food Products and Safety Laboratory. Show Heifer Project
Each winter the Arizona National Livestock Show, held the last week in December, hosts the Sun Classic Heifer Show & Sale. This sale offers producers the opportunity to show and sell show heifer prospects through the Arizona National.
The U of A has created a partnership with several of these breeders and they now send their heifers to the University in October and students prepare them for the show. Students are responsible for feeding, halter-breaking, working hair, clipping and preparing the cattle for the show. The students then care for the animals during the Arizona National, exhibit them in the show and take them through the sale. The University then receives a portion of the proceeds. It is a great chance for students to get hands-on experience with cattle, learn and have a great time!
The CLGA held it's first Livestock Jackpot Show in 2006 and has continued the tradition each year since at the U of A Farm. The show boasts a steer and heifer show, as well as market lamb and market goat shows. Students plan the event, obtain sponsors, hire judges, organize the event and sell concessions.
Past years prizes have included show boxes, embroidered jackets, show sticks, sheep and goat blankets and much more. The Jackpot Show provides a great opportunity for club members to get involved with livestock shows.
