The Deserts in Literature, II

About the cover image

thumbnail of cover image for this issue

This watercolor was painted by N. Scott Momaday especially to accompany his essay Landscape with words in foreground. Both the painting and the essay are reproduced in this issue of ALN by permission of the author/artist.

Dr. Momaday is an accomplished painter who sees his art as integral to his writing, and vice versa; each informs the other. Furthermore, he makes it clear in his essay that the lines separating art and literature are not as clear as we might think. This understanding is further borne out by other articles in this issue of ALN, most notably those by Richard Kimber and Christine Loflin.
