Campaign Cornerstones Overview: Fund Raising Plan for McClelland Park

Campaign Quiet phase (2004)

Focused on forming the executive committee, building awareness and excitement, branding the campaign, securing the first major gifts, and holding the campaign's kick-off at Homecoming 2004.

Quiet Phase activities and milestones included:

•  Convening Campaign Cornerstones Executive Committee . Committee members were recruited and the first meeting took place at the university in 2004.

•  Development of Campaign Theme, Naming Opportunities, and Website Planning . During 2004, the campaign was named and branded around the idea of "Be a cornerstone" of the new building and the future of the school. Naming opportunities were identified, priced, and marketed; three named "cornerstone" club levels (below $10K, $10-100K, and $100K+) were created and marketed; a brochure was produced. A website devoted to the campaign was planned. A sampling of printed materials related to the early phases of the campaign (2004-06) can be found at attachment H and a sample packet given to a prospect in late 2005 can be found at attachment I.

•  Lead Prospect Presentations . Dr. Shim and Campaign Co-Chair and Take Charge America Chief Executive Michael Hall presented the project to a large number of high-potential prospects (more than 100 project packets sent by mail, more than 100 individuals solicited in group settings, and 50 individuals solicited one-on-one). Approximately one in three people they met in person made a pledge.

•  Alumni Receptions . Receptions are held twice a year on average, one in Tucson and one elsewhere in the state (such as Yuma, Wilcox, and Phoenix) or out of state (Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.). In each of the last five years, there has been an annual spring reception at Dr. Shim's home, with a target group established for each event (1960s and earlier, 1970s, 1980s, and so on). The receptions are themed, with topics ranging from research presentations to honoring a regional alumna/us. The most recent emphasis has been on the building project. All receptions are sponsored by alumni, and thus represent very little investment for the university.

•  Homecoming/School Naming Event . On October 29, 2004, Homecoming weekend, Campaign Cornerstones had its official kick-off at a ceremony at the new building site. The renaming of the school after John and Doris Norton was announced amid great excitement. Outreach around the event included a teaser direct mailing and an executive committee dinner. Sixty alumni and friends attended.
